Educating Young Minds • Preventing Accidents • Protecting Lives • Building a Safety-Conscious India expresses the national purpose and long-term commitment of RailVidya – Children’s Railway and Metro Rail Safety Education Programme, an educational initiative of the All India Rail Safety Council (AIRSC). It reflects the belief that meaningful safety transformation begins with education and that every child equipped with the right knowledge can become a responsible passenger, a positive influence within the family and an ambassador for safer communities.
Educating young minds is the foundation of accident prevention. Childhood is the most important stage for developing awareness, discipline and responsible habits. When children are introduced to railway and metro-safety principles through clear, engaging and age-appropriate education, they learn not only to follow instructions but also to understand why those instructions protect life. This early knowledge strengthens judgement, develops confidence and prepares children to respond responsibly in unfamiliar or potentially dangerous situations.
India’s railway, suburban rail and metro systems connect millions of people and contribute significantly to education, employment, economic activity and national development. Children encounter these systems as passengers, students, residents of railway-adjacent communities and participants in school journeys. As railway and urban-mobility networks expand and modernise, children must be prepared to recognise the risks associated with tracks, platforms, level crossings, moving trains, automatic doors, escalators, lifts, electrical installations and crowded passenger environments.
Preventing accidents requires more than displaying warnings or responding after an unsafe event has occurred. It requires a proactive culture in which hazards are understood, safe choices are encouraged and responsible behaviour is consistently practised. RailVidya seeks to transform important safety messages into practical learning experiences through classroom sessions, illustrated materials, stories, demonstrations, quizzes, role-play, animations, activity sheets and digital resources.
Children must learn that railway tracks are restricted operational areas and must never be used for walking, playing, photography or shortcuts. They should always use authorised foot overbridges, subways and designated crossings; remain behind platform safety lines; avoid running or pushing; and never board or alight from a moving train. They must also understand that trains are extremely heavy, may approach faster than expected and cannot stop or change direction immediately.
Within metro systems, children should allow passengers to exit before boarding, mind the gap between the train and platform, keep hands and belongings away from automatic doors and never obstruct platform screen doors. Escalators, lifts, stairways, entry gates and digital passenger facilities should be used calmly and under appropriate adult supervision. Children must remain attentive to announcements, directional signs and instructions from authorised metro personnel.
Protecting lives is the highest purpose of every safety lesson. A preventable accident affects not only an individual but also a family, a school, a community and the nation. By helping children identify risks before harm occurs, RailVidya strengthens the principle that human life must always take priority over speed, convenience, curiosity, entertainment or unsafe shortcuts.
The programme promotes safety education without creating unnecessary fear. Children are encouraged to remain curious, ask questions, report unsafe behaviour and seek help from responsible adults or authorised personnel. Positive education develops awareness and confidence while reinforcing the message that a child should never attempt an unsafe rescue, enter a restricted area or handle suspicious or hazardous objects.
Parents, teachers and guardians are essential partners in this mission. Children learn through observation as well as instruction. Adults who respect warning systems, use authorised crossings, queue patiently, avoid distractions and treat transport facilities responsibly demonstrate that safety is a normal and non-negotiable part of public life. Consistent examples at home, in school and during travel strengthen the credibility of every safety lesson.
Schools provide an organised national platform for developing safe behaviour. Classroom learning, assemblies, safety clubs, poster campaigns, competitions, educational visits and teacher-orientation programmes can make railway and metro safety a continuing part of children’s education. RailVidya seeks to support schools with structured resources that translate technical safety information into accessible and memorable learning.
The initiative gives particular importance to inclusion. Children in cities, villages, remote areas, underserved communities and locations close to railway infrastructure must have equal access to safety education. Resources should be made available in Indian languages and adapted for different ages, learning abilities and local transport environments. A national safety mission can succeed only when its protective knowledge reaches every child.
Building a safety-conscious India also requires children to understand their role as responsible citizens. Railway and metro safety education promotes patience, vigilance, courtesy, cleanliness, care for public property and respect for railway and metro personnel. It encourages consideration for senior citizens, passengers with disabilities, families with infants and others who may need additional assistance.
Every safety-aware child can become a Young Railway and Metro Safety Ambassador. By sharing accurate messages with classmates, parents, relatives and neighbours, children can extend the value of their education into the wider community. The principle of “One Child–One Family–One Safety Message” demonstrates how a single informed learner can create a wider circle of awareness and positive behavioural change.
Safety education must also respond to the digital age. Mobile phones, headphones, photography, online challenges and real-time social-media activity can create serious distractions near tracks, platforms and moving trains. RailVidya encourages responsible technology use and teaches children to put devices away whenever full attention is required. Digital learning should strengthen safety—not become a source of risk.
As India advances towards modern trains, intelligent signalling, redeveloped stations, expanding metro networks and integrated public transport under Viksit Bharat 2047, human awareness must advance alongside technology. Infrastructure and innovation can strengthen operational protection, but their full value is realised only when passengers understand and respect safety systems.
This national vision is closely connected with the goal of Vision Zero—a future in which every preventable death and serious injury is treated as unacceptable. Achieving this goal requires education, institutional partnership, community participation and continuous reinforcement of responsible behaviour. Children must be recognised not merely as recipients of safety information but as active partners in building safer mobility.
