RailVidya Children’s Safety Education is a visionary national safety-awareness initiative of the All India Rail Safety Council (AIRSC) dedicated to educating children about railway safety, responsible travel, personal protection and safe behaviour in and around railway environments. The programme recognises that children are among the most important partners in building a safer nation. When safety knowledge is introduced at an early age through clear, engaging and age-appropriate education, it can develop into lifelong awareness, responsible behaviour and respect for public transport systems.
India’s extensive railway network connects communities, supports education and employment, strengthens economic development and serves millions of passengers every day. Children regularly encounter railway stations, trains, platforms, level crossings, foot overbridges and railway tracks during travel and in their local communities. RailVidya therefore seeks to equip them with the practical knowledge and confidence necessary to recognise risks, follow safety instructions and make responsible decisions.
The programme provides structured learning on essential subjects such as maintaining a safe distance from platform edges, using authorised foot overbridges and subways, never crossing or playing on railway tracks, avoiding moving trains, obeying warning signs and announcements, travelling under appropriate adult supervision and seeking assistance from authorised personnel during emergencies. It also promotes responsible conduct inside trains and stations, including orderly boarding, protection of railway property, cleanliness, consideration for senior citizens and passengers with disabilities, and respectful use of public facilities.
RailVidya uses a child-friendly teaching approach that combines classroom sessions, illustrated safety materials, posters, stories, demonstrations, quizzes, activity sheets, videos, role-play and guided discussions. Complex safety principles are translated into simple and memorable messages suited to different age groups. This participatory method encourages children not merely to remember rules, but to understand why those rules matter and how safe choices can prevent injuries and protect lives.
A major strength of the programme is its connection between education and behavioural development. Railway accidents involving unsafe pedestrian movement, trespassing, distraction, risky boarding or disregard for warning systems can often be prevented through timely awareness. By helping children identify hazards and respond correctly, RailVidya contributes to a preventive safety culture based on vigilance, discipline, preparedness and personal responsibility.
The initiative also supports schools, teachers and parents by providing an organised platform for railway-safety learning. Schools can integrate RailVidya activities into safety clubs, assemblies, community-awareness events and life-skills education. Teachers reinforce the lessons within the learning environment, while parents help children practise safe behaviour during actual journeys. This combined participation creates continuity between the classroom, the home and the wider community.
Children have a powerful influence on families and society. A safety-conscious child can remind parents and friends to use authorised crossings, avoid distractions, respect warning signals and follow safe travel practices. In this way, every participating student becomes a young safety ambassador, carrying responsible messages beyond the school and contributing to safer communities.
RailVidya further introduces children to railway heritage, modern transportation technology, environmental responsibility, emergency preparedness and the important contribution of railway personnel. This broader educational perspective helps students appreciate the railway not only as a mode of transport, but also as a vital national institution that must be used responsibly and protected collectively.
The programme reflects AIRSC’s commitment to public education, accident prevention and the development of a strong national safety culture. It can be implemented through school partnerships, awareness campaigns, teacher-orientation sessions, student safety clubs, competitions, exhibitions, special railway-safety days and community outreach programmes. Its inclusive approach may be adapted for different age groups, languages, regions and learning needs to ensure that safety education reaches children across the country.
