Message from the All India Rail Safety Council
The All India Rail Safety Council (AIRSC) firmly believes that the safety of children is fundamental to the safety, progress and future of our nation. As India’s railway network continues to expand and modernise, it is essential that young citizens are equipped with the knowledge, awareness and responsible habits necessary to remain safe while travelling by train and when living, studying or moving near railway environments. Railway-safety education must therefore begin at an early age and become an important part of every child’s learning and development.
With this national responsibility in mind, AIRSC established RailVidya Children’s Safety Education as its dedicated educational wing for promoting railway-safety awareness among schoolchildren. RailVidya represents our commitment to transforming safety education into an accessible, engaging and practical learning experience. It aims to help children recognise hazards, understand safety instructions, avoid dangerous behaviour and develop the confidence to make responsible decisions at railway stations, on platforms, inside trains, near tracks and at level crossings.
RailVidya is founded on the principle that education is one of the most powerful instruments of accident prevention. A child who understands the importance of using authorised crossings, maintaining a safe distance from platform edges, avoiding railway tracks, boarding trains responsibly and following warning signs is better prepared to protect both personal safety and the wellbeing of others. When these values are introduced early and reinforced consistently, they become lifelong habits that contribute to a stronger national safety culture.
AIRSC also recognises that children are powerful messengers of positive social change. An informed child can influence parents, friends and community members by encouraging safe and responsible behaviour. Through RailVidya, we seek to empower every participating student as a Young Rail Safety Ambassador—a confident learner who carries essential safety messages from the classroom into the home and the wider community.
The success of this national educational mission depends upon the active participation of schools, teachers, parents, railway professionals, government institutions, civil-society organisations and community leaders. AIRSC invites educational institutions throughout India to join RailVidya by facilitating safety-learning sessions, awareness campaigns, student safety clubs, competitions, demonstrations and community-outreach activities. Such collective participation can ensure that accurate and age-appropriate railway-safety education reaches children in urban, rural, remote and railway-adjacent communities.
Our approach is inclusive, child-centred and forward-looking. RailVidya seeks to communicate safety principles through classroom teaching, illustrations, storytelling, activity-based learning, role-play, quizzes, digital content and professional demonstrations. These methods help children understand not only what safety rules require, but also why those rules are essential for protecting life. The programme is intended to accommodate different age groups, regional languages, learning abilities and local circumstances so that no child is excluded from this important knowledge.
RailVidya also encourages children to appreciate the wider national importance of the railway system. Along with personal safety, the programme promotes discipline, cleanliness, environmental responsibility, respect for railway personnel, care for public property and consideration for fellow passengers, senior citizens and persons with disabilities. Through these values, railway-safety education becomes a broader lesson in responsible citizenship and public service.
As India advances towards the aspirations of Viksit Bharat 2047, AIRSC envisions a modern railway ecosystem that is not only technologically advanced, efficient and sustainable, but also supported by an informed and safety-conscious society. Infrastructure and innovation are essential to railway transformation; however, lasting safety also depends upon public awareness, responsible behaviour and shared accountability. RailVidya contributes to this national vision by preparing children to become vigilant passengers, responsible citizens and future leaders of a safer India.
