Young Safety Ambassadors
The RailVidya Young Safety Ambassadors Programme is a national student-leadership and public-awareness initiative of RailVidya – Children’s Railway and Metro Rail Safety Education Programme, the educational wing of the All India Rail Safety Council (AIRSC). It is designed to empower children with railway and metro-safety knowledge, responsible behavioural values and the confidence to communicate accurate safety messages within their schools, families and communities.
Children are not only recipients of safety education; they can also become influential partners in accident prevention. A child who understands railway and metro risks can make safer personal decisions, encourage classmates to act responsibly and remind family members to follow authorised procedures. Through positive education and guided participation, every student has the potential to become an ambassador for safety and responsible mobility.
A Young Safety Ambassador is expected to learn, practise and share safety. The role begins with personal conduct: staying away from railway tracks, using authorised crossings, obeying gates and warning signals, remaining behind platform safety lines and avoiding distraction around moving trains. Within metro systems, ambassadors should allow passengers to exit before boarding, mind the gap, keep clear of closing doors and use escalators, lifts, stairways and ticket gates responsibly.
The programme is founded on leadership through example. Young Safety Ambassadors are not enforcement officers and should never confront unsafe individuals, enter restricted areas or attempt dangerous interventions. Their responsibility is to demonstrate safe behaviour, communicate politely, report concerns to a trusted adult and seek assistance from authorised railway, metro, security or emergency personnel when necessary.
Students may become ambassadors by completing structured learning modules, participating in safety activities and demonstrating an understanding of essential railway and metro-safety principles. The programme may include classroom sessions, interactive quizzes, scenario-based exercises, creative projects and a formal safety pledge. Recognition should reflect meaningful learning and responsible conduct rather than attendance alone.
Young Safety Ambassadors can help organise school assemblies, poster exhibitions, quizzes, storytelling sessions, safety-message boards and supervised awareness campaigns. They may also contribute to RailVidya Safety Clubs, where students work with designated teachers to plan regular learning activities and promote safe travel practices throughout the academic year.
The principle of “One Child–One Family–One Safety Message” is central to the programme. Each ambassador is encouraged to take one verified safety message home and discuss it with parents, siblings and relatives. A simple reminder to use a foot overbridge, wait behind a closed level-crossing gate or put away a mobile phone near railway infrastructure can extend the impact of school education into the wider community.
Peer-to-peer learning is another important feature. Children often respond positively to messages communicated by classmates in clear and relatable language. Under teacher supervision, ambassadors can lead short discussions, present safety stories and help younger students understand warning signs and responsible passenger behaviour. All information shared must be drawn from approved educational resources.
Young Safety Ambassadors may support safe-route awareness in railway-adjacent schools by helping teachers communicate approved school routes and discourage track trespassing. Students must never inspect railway tracks, gates or electrical equipment themselves. Any observed concern should be reported to the supervising teacher for referral through the appropriate official channel.
Digital responsibility forms an essential part of ambassador training. Students should understand the dangers of mobile-phone distraction, unsafe selfies and online challenges near tracks, platforms, metro doors and electrical installations. They can promote constructive digital messages through approved posters, comics, animations and videos produced in safe, supervised environments.
Ambassadors should also champion inclusive public transport. This includes respecting reserved seats, keeping tactile pathways and accessible facilities clear, showing consideration for senior citizens and passengers with disabilities, and treating every traveller with dignity. Safety leadership includes compassion, courtesy and respect for public spaces.
Emergency awareness should be taught calmly and practically. Young Safety Ambassadors learn to remain composed, stay with responsible adults, follow official announcements and seek help from authorised personnel. They must never attempt an unsafe rescue, touch suspicious objects or misuse emergency equipment. Their role is to recognise concern, communicate clearly and enable trained professionals to respond.
Teachers serve as programme mentors and ensure that all ambassador activities remain safe, accurate and age-appropriate. A designated teacher coordinator can guide meetings, review student-created materials and maintain communication with parents. Clear supervision protects children and preserves the educational integrity of the programme.
Parents and guardians are important partners in supporting student leadership. They should reinforce the same safety practices at home and during travel, encourage children’s participation and avoid placing them in situations beyond their age or responsibility. Adults must demonstrate that safety rules apply consistently to everyone.
Participating students may receive a RailVidya Young Safety Ambassador Certificate, badge or formal school recognition after meeting clearly defined learning and participation requirements. Recognition can motivate sustained involvement, but it should never encourage competition that compromises cooperation or safe conduct.
Schools demonstrating sustained commitment may be recognised as RailVidya Safety-Smart Schools. Such recognition may consider teacher participation, student activities, inclusion, family engagement and evidence that safety learning is being reinforced throughout the year. The aim is to celebrate responsible educational practice and encourage wider adoption.
The programme should be inclusive and accessible to students across government, private, rural, urban, residential, special and railway-adjacent schools. Learning resources may be offered in Indian languages and adapted for different ages and abilities. Every child should have the opportunity to participate meaningfully without discrimination.
As India advances towards modern railways, expanding metro systems and integrated public transport under Viksit Bharat 2047, the nation will require citizens who can use these systems safely and responsibly. Young Safety Ambassadors represent an investment in that future—developing informed passengers, compassionate community members and responsible national leaders.
The programme also supports the aspiration of Vision Zero, which regards every preventable death and serious injury as unacceptable. Technology and infrastructure remain essential, but sustainable safety transformation also depends on public awareness and behavioural responsibility. Children can make an important contribution when their participation is properly educated, supported and supervised.
Through the Young Safety Ambassadors Programme, AIRSC seeks to create a nationwide network of students united by a commitment to protect life. When children learn safety, practise it consistently and share it responsibly, they help transform awareness into action and education into national progress.
